MERRY CHRISTMAS DARLING

Music by Richard Carpenter
Lyrics by Frank Pooler
In 1966, Frank Pooler, director of the University Choir at CSULB, which I was attending,  asked me to set music to a lyric, “Merry Christmas, Darling,” that he had written twenty years earlier.  We were both pleased with the result, and for the next several years, Karen and I would perform the song at different Christmas parties for which we were hired.  It wasn’t long after the success of “Close To You” and “We’ve Only Just Begun,” that we decided to record the song for a fall, 1970 release.  The lead vocal was re-recorded , at Karen’s request, in 1978, and the recording remixed the same year, for inclusion in our Christmas Portrait album.
